Mapping workflow
Use GPX logs with OpenStreetMap and QGIS
GPX tracks are useful beyond fitness. They can support OpenStreetMap checks, QGIS analysis, travel records, field work, route comparison and long-term personal archives.
Record clean tracks
Start GPS Logger before moving, keep phone with a clear sky view when possible, then stop after the route ends. For repeated paths, multiple GPX tracks can help confirm trail shape or road access.
Export portable files
Export a saved track as GPX for mapping tools or KML for map viewers. For long-term backup, create a whole-history GPX ZIP from the app. You can also download a small sample GPX file to test import steps.
OpenStreetMap use cases
- Check whether paths, tracks or roads exist where expected.
- Compare repeated traces before editing map geometry.
- Keep private evidence for later mapping sessions.
QGIS use cases
- Load GPX as vector layers for route analysis.
- Style tracks by trip, date or purpose after import.
- Compare commutes, hikes, survey walks or travel days.
Keep privacy in mind
GPX files can reveal home, work and routine locations. Trim or avoid sharing sensitive parts. For private logging principles, read why offline GPS logging matters.
